Greensburg's Big Well

About the well: Greenburg's Big Well is on the rebound after a May 4, 2007, tornado tore through Greensburg, destroying most of the town and part of the well itself.
A temporary gift shop has been erected in the old shop's grounds at 315 S. Sycamore.
The well was originally constructed in 1887. It is 109-feet deep and 32-feet across, making it the world's largest hand-dug well. The housing for the well also contained the world's largest pallasite meteorite, which weights 1,000 pounds. However, after the meteorite was recovered after the May 4 tornado, it became housed in the Sternsberg Museum in Hays.
Although debris from the May tornado still blocks a large portion of the well, visitors can view the well from the top down.
It is unclear when tours of the well will begin.
The well was voted one of the "8 Wonders of Kansas" in 2008.
Where: The well is located at 315 S. Sycamore in Greensburg.
Cost: Tours are currently suspended.
Hours: The gift shop is open Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. It is closed Mondays.
